Greatness
Feb 06, 2011

On my way home from my last trip to America, I attended Life conference in Auckland. It was a lot of fun to be there, to hear good messages, to worship God with a huge gathering of people, and to catch up with friends from all over the place!

While I was there, one of the themes that I picked up in many of the messages was 'GREATNESS!' That God wants to make our lives, our ministries, our Churches and our nation great! So over the last few days I have found myself thinking about the concept of greatness, and what that means for us as Christians called to lead. How is greatness to be expressed in our lives, preaching, leadership and ministry?

Listen to these words of David, one man who we would consider to be truly great. He said this...
2 Samuel 22:36 'You give me your shield of victory; you stoop down to make me great.'

What an outrageous idea! That God would stoop down to make us great. That He would work in our lives to make us great. I have to confess that in many ways that kinda does my head in! The God of heaven is at work in our lives to make us great! Amazing... but what does that look like?

We live in a world that defines greatness as rich, powerful, high profile, influential. But could it be that God has a definition of greatness that is somewhat different? I suspect so... My suspicion is in God's mind, the ultimate definition of greatness is His Son. That Jesus is the highest expression of greatness... both in His sacrifice to pay the price for sin, and in His total defeat of death and hell when He rose from the dead! If He is the ultimate definition of greatness, then when God stoops down to make us great... He is working in us to create lives that point directly to Jesus!

Greatness... a life that points to the love, majesty, power, authority and outrageous goodness of the matchless Son of God! Now that is something I can get excited about... how about you?
